What's Wrong With You?

How to Speak Clearly?`

Maybe once in your life you've asked yourself "What's wrong with my tongue?" You deliver your presentation as expected, but what made them misunderstood it? This topic will help you answer the questions "how must I say it?"

Complicated means You're Smart?

Most of us thought that when someone speaks jargon he or she is the master of hid field. we admire them for saying such flowery words much like Shakespeare. The ironic part is that no matter how good they used words nothing seems to settle in our heads.

Complication Equals Misunderstanding

I remember when I did my report on Windows Speech Recognition as part of my Program Design course. I've been through sleepless nights just to finish it, and spent dimes for coffee to keep me thinking. i prepare for it up to the finest detail. but when I started reporting, it's like the audience where in limbo. I can even red in their minds, "What the hell is he talking about?" Even my professor commented that he can't follow. I was really dismayed. everything was perfect except one. And that is my wording. No one can understand my report except me. The worst is that made me feel like someone with an alien tongue.

Complicated is Disaster

The night before my defense, I practiced really hard. And I am expecting to get appreciations, but then what I get was misunderstanding. The worst thing was that my professor asked me to stopped reporting, Maybe you have experienced the same thing before. I asked my teacher about it, and he said you need to be simple. "What you mean of simple?" I asked myself. For me that report was simple and I understand it all the way. How come they don't? The answer is that I tailored it only for myself not to them.

The common mistake of most if us is our desire to be great. And what we do is to play with our buckets of words. Remember that to be great you need to be understood. And how can you be understoood if you keep using words they can't understand. Now the dilemma is when we can say it is on its simplest.

Simplicity is the Best

To know that it is simple, you have to ask yourself the five following questions (The Pentagon):

  1. Who are your audience?
  2. If your audience is on seventh grade will they understand you?
  3. If your seventh grader what words will you understand?
  4. Is the statement straight forward?
  5. If someone will sit in, will be understand what you are saying?
Always the first question to ask in any situation is "Who are around?" Because that will dictate the depth and length of your statement. For example, you are about to talk to a preschooler about the ocean. Preschoolers will not understand plankton, but they will understand it if you will use Spongebob. You need to tailor everything based to your audience make sure it is appropriate for them not just because you feel it fits.

Questions 2 and 3 pertains to the seventh grade rule. As a general rule, you nee to treat your audience as seventh graders to have a firm ground in tailoring your presentation. This is to assure that everyone understands everything. Jargon are applicable only if you are hundred percent sure that everyone is of same level of education or higher. Make sure when you finish writing your presentations never forget to read again and ask questions 2 and 3.

Remember that retention lasts for only 10 minutes the most. In other words, don't go around the bushes of words. Take them on the center.

Question 5 is a very important question. If someone past by your room and hear you talking will he have quick idea of what you are saying? If yes, then, congratulations you made your presentation simple. direct and logical.

"You want change? Make it. Don't wait for it."
